Leverage Active Directory. First, determine all your business units; pick a standard, agreed upon name for each budgetary business unit. Pick an AD Attribute for the computer object which you can populate with the name of the business unit. Then modify AD System Discovery to pull in that additional attribute. Of course, the most time consuming piece will be assigning the existing assets, and the on- going process of updating the AD Attribute with the business unit. That could be a process using a report from Config. Mgr of a subselect showing all computers which have a recent AD Discovery Date, but don't have that attribute defined. Include the Console User in the report and that should be enough to help whomever is updating AD to populate that attribute with the right business unit. Why AD and not a local tag? Because for most companies, AD is a better, more reliable repository for information; and more people understand it. If you have non Config. Mgr folk (SQL gurus, or more especially, Management types), they understand the role AD plays more than they understand Config. Mgr. Using AD as the master repository, and you'll just be pulling information out of AD to display in a report, that's more palatable. It's also easier then for other groups to use that populated AD Attribute - - they can also leverage it for their projects. Config. Mgr reports might be the reason today to have that information, but long term for the company, having that information in AD is a good long term location. Standardize. Simplify.
